The way blood and lymphatic fluid move through the body can affect how different tissues feel, including the breast area. Breast tissue has its own network of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, which support the movement of oxygen, nutrients, and fluid through the area.

When circulation or fluid movement is affected, you may notice sensations such as heaviness, swelling, or tenderness around the breasts. Breast massage and lymphatic drainage massage may encourage movement around the breast area and help ease feelings of tightness or heaviness.

Alongside these practices, regular physical activity, staying hydrated, and avoiding smoking may help improve blood circulation.

What Poor Blood Circulation Does to the Body

Poor circulation usually becomes noticeable in areas such as the hands, feet and legs, particularly when an artery is narrowed or blood flow is otherwise impaired.

Some effects of poor blood circulation on the body may include:

  • Cold Hands and Feet: Reduced blood flow can make the extremities unusually cold.
  • Muscle Weakness or Pain: Muscles may feel weak or painful during activities such as walking when they are not receiving enough blood flow.
  • Numbness: Reduced blood flow can cause numbness in the affected area.
  • Tingling: A “pins and needles” sensation can occur in areas affected by poor circulation.
  • Changes in Skin Colour: The skin may appear pale or blue when blood flow is reduced.
  • Swelling: Swelling can occur in areas affected by circulation problems.

Can Poor Circulation Affect Breast Health?

Severely reduced blood supply can damage any tissue, including breast tissue. If blood flow is severely or persistently disrupted, it can affect the breast tissue in several ways:

  • Tissue Damage: Severe or prolonged disruption of blood supply can deprive breast tissue of oxygen, potentially resulting in tissue injury.
  • Delayed Healing: Reduced blood flow to damaged tissue may make it more difficult for the area to heal.
  • Changes in Breast Tissue: Severe tissue damage can sometimes lead to fat necrosis, which may appear as a firm area or palpable lump.

What Supports Circulation Around the Breast Area?

Several lifestyle habits and wellness practices can stimulate blood flow throughout the body and around the breast area, including:

1. Breast Massage

Breast massage involves manually moving the skin and surrounding tissues. Like massage elsewhere on the body, it may temporarily affect local blood flow and can provide a sense of relaxation and comfort when performed appropriately.

If you include breast massage in your wellness routine:

  • use comfortable pressure that does not cause pain
  • avoid repeatedly pressing hard on the same area
  • stop if the breast becomes painful or irritated
  • do not massage a new or unexplained lump in an attempt to remove it
  • have persistent pain, swelling or skin changes checked by a doctor

2. Lymphatic Drainage Massage for the Breast Area

The lymphatic system helps prevent excess fluid buildup in tissues and supports immunity by transporting immune cells and filtering lymph.

Unlike blood circulation, the lymphatic system has no central pump such as the heart. Lymph movement is supported by lymphatic vessel contractions, muscle movement, breathing and other physical forces.

Lymphatic drainage massage for the breast encourages fluid movement toward areas with active lymph nodes.

  • Start with Deep Breathing: Begin with five slow breaths to help encourage lymph movement. Extend the arms as you breathe in and bring them back across the chest as you breathe out.
  • Stimulate the Lymph Nodes: Work around the neck, collarbone, and underarm areas on both sides using light pressure and slight skin stretching.
  • Massage Across the Chest: Use gentle movements across the chest to encourage fluid from the affected side towards an area with working lymph nodes.
  • Massage Across the Breast: Divide the breast into four sections and work through each area in turn. Use your palms or the backs of your hands with light pressure, stretching the skin as you move the fluid towards the appropriate drainage areas.
  • Finish with Deep Breathing: Repeat the breathing technique to complete the sequence.

3. Daily Habits To Practise for Circulation

Some natural ways to improve blood vessel function and circulation include:

  • Stay Physically Active: Staying physically active through walking, cycling, swimming, and other moderate activities can improve blood flow and support cardiovascular health.
  • Wear a Bra that Fits Comfortably: A properly fitted bra can help reduce breast discomfort and pressure caused by an unsuitable fit.
  • Take a Balanced Diet and Drink Adequate Fluids: A varied diet containing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other nutrient-rich foods can support heart health. Reducing intake of foods high in saturated fat and added sugars can also help reduce cardiovascular risk. Choosing water over sugary drinks can also help reduce added sugar as part of a balanced diet.
  • Avoid Smoking: Smoking and tobacco use can damage blood vessels and increase cardiovascular risk.
